IP Connectivity // Lesson 03

Static Routing.

Configure and verify IPv4 and IPv6 network, host, default and floating static routes.

IPv4IPv6Default routeHost routeFloating static
01 // Mental model

Start with the big picture.

Targets a destination prefix that represents multiple addresses.

CCNA focus: Confirm the next hop is reachable, the route is installed, the intended prefix wins, and return traffic has a route back.
02 // Building blocks

Know what each part does.

01

Network route

Targets a destination prefix that represents multiple addresses.

02

Default route

Matches when no more-specific route exists: /0 in IPv4 or IPv6.

03

Host route

Targets one address with /32 for IPv4 or /128 for IPv6.

04

Floating static

Uses a higher administrative distance so it becomes a backup to a dynamic route.

03 // Compare and recognise

Read the clues.

ItemWhat to remember
IPv4 next hopip route 10.20.0.0 255.255.0.0 192.0.2.2
IPv4 defaultip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.0.2.1
IPv6 routeipv6 route 2001:db8:20::/64 2001:db8:12::2
FloatingAdd an AD higher than the primary route source.
04 // Cisco IOS configuration

Cisco IOS configuration.

R1(config)# ip route 10.20.0.0 255.255.0.0 192.0.2.2
R1(config)# ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.0.2.1
R1(config)# ip route 10.20.0.0 255.255.0.0 198.51.100.2 200
R1(config)# ipv6 route ::/0 2001:db8:ffff::1
R1# show ip route static
R1# show ipv6 route static

Read the example from top to bottom, then verify the resulting state. Configuration is only complete when the output matches the intended design.

05 // Exam and troubleshooting

Turn facts into a method.

  • ip route 10.20.0.0 255.255.0.0 192.0.2.2
  • ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.0.2.1
  • ipv6 route 2001:db8:20::/64 2001:db8:12::2
  • Add an AD higher than the primary route source.
Exam checkpoint: Confirm the next hop is reachable, the route is installed, the intended prefix wins, and return traffic has a route back.
06 // Check yourself

Static Routing quiz.

1. What prefix identifies an IPv6 default route?

2. What makes a static route 'floating'?

3. Which IPv4 prefix length describes one host?

4. Why might a configured static route be absent from the table?

5. What command shows configured IPv4 static routes installed in the RIB?
